KARACHI: Over the past week, all that anyone could talk about was the Will Smith and Chris Rock
debacle that took place during the Oscars Awards Ceremony. In case you missed it, Will Smith got up on center stage and slapped Chris Rock over a joke made about his wife’s hair loss, which was a result of alopecia, a medical condition. Naturally, Smith’s actions were condemned by The Academy
and there were talks about him being removed. But before that could happen, Smith chose to resign. What did Will Smith have to say about all that took place? And what does resigning entail? Here is a breakdown of all that you need to know.

“I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate,” Smith
said in a statement
and added, “Change takes time and I am committed to doing the work to ensure that I never again allow violence to overtake reason.”

David Rubin, President, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, also released a statement which acknowledged and accepted Smith’s “immediate resignation. “We will continue to move forward with our disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct, in advance of our next scheduled board meeting on April 18,” Rubin added.
But what does this mean for Will Smith? Will his win for Best Actor still be valid? Will he have to return his Oscar? Smith’s resignation simply means that he will no longer serve as a voting member of the Academy. He will get to keep his Oscar, he will still be considered for future nominations and he will still be invited to future award ceremonies including the Oscars.
