From Mujhe Pyar Hua Tha to Jurm, Wahaj Ali continues to dominate our screens

By Aliya Zuberi

KARACHI: Wahaj Ali isn’t a new face when it comes to dramas and entertainment industry. He made his debut back in 2015 with Ishq Ibadat but remained relatively underrated until he managed to win over audiences with his roles in Ishq Jalebi and Jo Bichar Gaye. But it seems as though 2023 is the year for Wahaj Ali with four dramas, two running and two about to air, under his belt this year and each shows him in a different kind of role. Here’s a look into how Wahaj Ali is dominating our screens.

Mujhe Pyar Hua Tha

To be fair, Mujhe Pyar Hua Tha doesn’t do justice to Wahaj Ali and his skill as an actor. But even with little room for creativity, he does manage to make audiences sympathize with his character and be infuriated with his leading lady.

The story line is as basic as can be. Saad (Wahaj Ali) loves his cousin Maheer (Hania Aamir). But Maheer loves Areeb (Zaviyaar Naumaan). Maheer’s mother supports her daughter’s interest in Areeb because he’s all that she could have wanted for her daughter, especially in terms of his financial background. And Maheer is everything that Areeb’s mother doesn’t want for her son.

A death, an absent groom and a wedding to save face is what leads to Saad marrying the love of his life. Wahaj Ali successfully convinces the audiences of just how much Saad loves Maheer. From the puppy dog eyes he constantly made at her during the first few episodes, to the longing and forlorn expression on his face when he realized he had to let her go. Wahaj Ali also manages to reignite hope in audiences that in dramas men can be soft, gentle partners too!

Tere Bin

Taking a 180 on characters is Wahaj Ali playing Murtasim in the ongoing drama serial Tere Bin. It’s fair to say, most of the female population in Pakistan plan to name their sons Murtasim after Wahaj Ali’s performance. The drama has managed to gather quite the following and it isn’t just for the plot.

Wahaj Ali plays the role of a leader of a village who is what many would expect men in such dramas to be. Aggressive, dominating and trigger friendly, it’s ironic he ends up getting married to a woman who goes against everything he stands for. As terrible as his character starts off, Murtasim does develop a character arc and no one could have pulled it off better than Wahaj Ali.

It isn’t easy to let the expressions do the talking in the absence of dialogue but Wahaj Ali does just that. One smoldering look can make us feel the anger radiating off of him and in the very next scene it can be used in hopes of melting Meerub's cold heart. And let’s not forget, it seems as though Wahaj Ali has mastered the art of romance with his character in Tere Bin which has the audience wondering what is wrong with Meerub for being so oblivious!

Jurm

It’s been a long time coming that Pakistani dramas move beyond the typical storylines and who better to star in such a drama than Wahaj Ali. The actor is set to star in a mystery/crime thriller called Jurm which is set to air on Geo Entertainment starting tonight.

The story stars Wahaj Ali and Durefishan Saleem in the main leads. From the teasers which feature a voice over claiming, “In this world, we give the most importance to the famous and so, the innocent ones are always marked as criminals,” we believe the two leads are a couple on their way to start a new life despite Durefishan’s character’s concern about her partner’s past. But when tragedy strikes and secrets threaten to spill over we cannot help wonder, “Who is the real criminal? Are they really criminals or are they portrayed as one?”

22 Qadam

Launching on the new entertainment channel Green Entertainment, 22 Qadam is a sports centric drama which stars Hareem Farooq and Wahaj Ali in main roles. To be fair, the drama focuses more on the plight of a woman who wants to do the unthinkable and being an athlete, it also shows just how important it is to have support from those closest to you. Which is where Wahaj Ali comes in.

While Hareem Farooq struggles to just play cricket and convince others of her skills as a cricketer, Wahaj Ali’s character is succeeding on the pitch. And rather than discouraging her from her passion, he is shown to be there throughout her journey and support her in any way possible. And if that isn’t wholesome, we don’t know what is! No one could have been more fitting for the role than Wahaj Ali!

Needless to say, with his various roles in each of the dramas we are very excited to see more of Wahaj Ali on our screens!
