United States Senator Bernie Sanders expressed his views regarding the current situation in Indian-occupied Kashmir on Saturday in an address to the Islamic Society of North America in Houston. He stated that he was deeply concerned and was against the revoking of Indian Kashmir’s autonomy by the Indian government.
He added that the communications blackout by the Indian government in the name of security is denying the citizens of Kashmir the access they need to medical care and voiced his opinion against it by saying that it is a threat to the “life-saving care that patients need”. In his address he stood firm on this blockade being lifted immediately and alerted his audience that he identifies India’s actions as “unacceptable.”
Bernie’s address was well-received by his audience who applauded his statement: “The United States’ government must speak out boldly in support of international humanitarian law and in support of a UN backed peaceful resolution that respects the will of the Kashmiri people.” He also spoke about hate crimes against Muslim communities and the need to speak out against prejudice and discrimination.
The event which he spoke at was also addressed by PM Imran Khan via live streaming who also explained the situation in Kashmir. According to The News, the Islamic Society of North America Conference is attended by 30,000 people every year.
Many have taken to Twitter to express their appreciation of Bernie speaking about Kashmir and giving it the attention that it deserves.
