Is it appropriate to kiss your children on the lips?

KARACHI: Feroze Khan isn’t one to shy away from controversy. The actor fell from grace when his now ex-wife accused him of being physically abusive towards her and the two were embroiled in a custody dispute over their two children. Just when the dust had settled, the Aye Musht-e-Khaak star found himself in yet another controversy that started quite the interesting debate: is it appropriate to kiss your children on the lips?

It all began with a picture of Feroze Khan kissing his son, Sultan, on the lips. For many, it was a normal picture of a parent expressing their affection for their offspring. For others, however, the picture was a shock. In a country such as ours, sex is a taboo and physical displays of affection, even the most non sexual ones, are not supposed to leave the bedroom. And so naturally, a peck on the lips was deemed inappropriate because it’s considered a more sexual act. But is it really?

When Khan uploaded the picture, the first thought that popped into many people’s minds was that the kiss was way too sexualized and it wasn’t an appropriate interaction between father and son. Many even questioned if the son would be able to distinguish between good touch vs bad touch when his own father was blurring the boundaries.

However, much to the surprise of many, kissing your children on the lips isn’t unheard of and is, in fact, considered normal by quite a lot of people! Every parent has a different way of expressing their love and some like to smother their children with kisses. A kiss on the lip is no different than a kiss on the cheek. Interactions between children and parents shouldn’t be seen as sexual. And it’s not just Feroze Khan who expresses his love for his child with a peck on the lips. Celebrities like David Beckham and Shah Rukh Khan have been pictured kissing their kids in the same manner. As David Beckham put it, “We want to show our kids love and we protect them, look after them and support them, and we’re very affectionate with them.” However, he also did draw a line when it came to his older kids’ boundaries and explained, “Brooklyn, maybe not. Brooklyn’s 18, he might find that a little bit strange.” Many took to the comments of Khan’s comment section to defend the picture.

There is no right or wrong way of expressing your affection for your children. Some may not be comfortable with physical love while others may not have an issue with it. Whatever one’s reservations about the actor may be, it is unfair to sexualize the interaction between Feroze Khan and his son.
