KARACHI: If you’re someone who enjoys crime shows, boy do we have just the one for you. In 2018, one of the most bizarre and one of the most shocking cases took place in Burari, India. Eleven members of one family, three entire generations, all ranging from the ages 15 years old to 77 years old were found dead. Ten were hanging from the ceiling with their mouths tapped shut, hand and feet tied and blindfolded. The eleventh member of the family was also the eldest and she was found strangled. Was it a murder? Or was there something more sinister lurking behind the Burari Deaths? That’s what the new Netflix show House of Secrets: The Burari Deaths set out to find out.
The official synopsis released by Netflix read, “Suicide, murder… or something else? This docuseries examines chilling truths and theories around the deaths of 11 members of a Delhi family.” The three part docuseries has been directed by Yadav and Anubhav Chopra who explain that the series sets out to explore the “‘intricate, complex and sometimes hidden workings of a traditional Indian family.” The series offers an insight not only to the incident itself but also into the police work, the investigation, what crime reporters had to say and more importantly, what friends and family of all those who died had to say.

With real footage from the investigation and even crime scene footage, nothing in the docuseries is a recreation and it makes the Burari Deaths that much more real and that much more shocking. Police officers will recount what they saw and how even they were shocked and the medical examiner will also weigh in with his autopsy result. Family and friends will recall a strange phenomenon that the person who was believed to be the mastermind behind the incident seemed to be experiencing. Psychologists will have their own theories about what went on in the “House of Secrets.”
