KARACHI: 2011 seems like it was a lifetime ago. Well technically it was a decade ago. It was when Game of Thrones first premiered on HBO and it was the year Osama bin Laden was found and killed. It was also the year these famous songs were released and we were all obsessed with them. Today we celebrate five songs from 2011 that turn ten this year.
1. ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ – One Direction
British boy band sensation One Direction which included Zayn Malik and Harry Styles, released their debut single ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ in 2011. It marks the year our love affair with the band began till they decided to take a break (we refuse to believe that they split) in 2017.

Our favorite line: ‘And when you smile at the ground it ain’t hard to tell, you don’t know you’re beautiful.’
2. ‘We Found Love’ (ft. Calvin Harris)’ – Rihanna
2011 seemed to be a great year for Rihanna who teamed up with DJ Calvin Harris for this catchy hit song. She went on to release ‘You da One’ and ‘S&M’ which were equally popular.
Our favorite line: ‘Yellow diamonds in the light and we’re standing side by side as your shadow crosses mine.’
3. ‘Moves Like Jagger’- Maroon 5 ft Christina Aguilera
Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera’s ode to Rolling Stone’s Mick Jagger earned them a Grammy Award nomination for the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category 2012.
Our favorite line: ‘Just shoot for the stars and if it feels right and aim for my heart.’
4. ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ – Gotye
Out of all the songs from the 2011 lineup, this breakup anthem hit closest for anyone whose heart was broken that year.
Our favorite line: ‘You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness like resignation to the end.’
5. ‘Someone Like You’ – Adele
Adele’s breakup ballad hit a little differently. It oozed maturity and resilience through heartache, the kind of strength we all wish we could have.
Our favorite line: ‘I remember you said, sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead.’
