5 Pakistani productions you can rewatch on Netflix

A list of some of the best local dramas and movies that are available on Netflix

By Farheen Abdullah

KARACHI: Pakistan may not be vastly represented on Netflix, a platform which is dominated by content from Bollywood and Hollywood. Netflix is also yet to produce an original show or feature film from Pakistan. However, this is not to say that Pakistani content has no place on the OTT platform, because it does. To remind audiences of some of the remarkable Pakistani productions which are available on the site, here is a list of our top five dramas and movies which can be rewatched on Netflix.

Humsafar

Released in 2011, Humsafar still has the same place in the hearts of its audiences 10 years down the line. Starring Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan in lead roles (which was a contributing factor towards the drama’s success), the project was a hit for its cast, script, and simplicity.

Sadqay Tumhare

Also featuring Mahira Khan in a lead role, Sadqay Tumhare is a romantic drama which first aired on local television in 2014. Written by Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar and set in the 1980s, the biographical drama narrates the story of its own writer. Adnan Malik wonderfully penned the role of Khalil while Mahira Khan won hearts as Shano, the two of whom have been engaged as kids.

Zindagi Gulzar Hai

Another Pakistani drama to star Fawad Khan and be an instant hit, Zindagi Gulzar Hai is the story of strength, patience and self-confidence. It is one of the rare dramas to portray women in a positive and strong light, and represent strength which so many of our female characters on screen now lack. Sanam Saeed, specially, continues to win the hearts of her fans as Kashaf, and is an actor who always brings her A-game to the screen.

Cake

Another one of Sanam Saeed’s success stories, Cake came as an absolute breath of fresh air when it was released in 2018. Starring Aamina Sheikh, Adnan Malik and Mikaal Zulfiqar alongside Sanam Saeed, the film tells the story of love, fear, relationships and how dysfunctional desi families can be. The film was also sent for consideration for the Foreign Language Film Award at the 91st Academy Awards.

Chalay Thay Saath

A rather under rated movie, Chalay Thay Saath features one of Pakistan’s most-adored actors, Syra Yousuf. In the film, Yousuf’s character, Resham, falls in love with a Chinese boy. Not only is the film about romantic and self-love, it also beautifully captures the breathtaking views that Pakistan’s mountains have to offer. A sweet and simple watch, the movie is definitely good enough to be acknowledged.
