KARACHI: Earlier this year, British-Pakistani actor Riz Ahmed made headlines after he landed himself a Best Actor nomination at the Oscars for his role in Sound of Metal. While he may not have won the Oscar, Ahmed only seems to be going uphill with his achievements. In more recent news, the actor has been nominated as the President of Platform Jury at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2021.

“I am honoured to be named president of the Platform jury at TIFF this year. TIFF has always been a festival that showcases bold and daring cinema on a global stage. Its commitment to celebrating small independent films, like Sound of Metal has had such a significant impact on my career and many others,” Riz Ahmed said. “I’m looking forward to watching all of this year’s selections and working alongside my fellow jury members.”

A digital festival, TIFF 2021, is ready to take place from September 9th to 18th. For the category that Ahmed is President of, the competition has eight entries including Ivan Grbovic’s Drunken Birds, Jenna Cato Bass’s Mlungu Wam (Good Madam), and Scott McGehee, and David Siegel’s Montana Story.

The world’s largest public film festival, TIFF 2021 will be a combination of a digital and an in-person festival. People in Canada can enjoy the festival at home, in open-air cinemas and socially distanced conventional theatres. Before the festival begins, TIFF 2021 has announced Benedict Cumberbatch as the recipient of the TIFF Tribute Actor Award, for his captivating performances.
