KARACHI: There are a handful celebrities that can be considered woke. Eman Suleman is one of them. So is Osman Khalid Butt. But one name that is slowly climbing the ladder of fame is model Rehmat Ajmal and perhaps there were more expectations from her because she’s a woman, an actress and she’s part of the controversial TV show Meray Paas Tum Ho.

While the TV show has been hugely successful, it has also received a lot of criticism for promoting misogyny and writer Khalil ur Rehman Qamar has been criticized for moral policing women on and off screen, describing at length the characteristics of a ‘good’ woman versus a ‘bad’ one.

Amid this criticism, stars (especially women) who willingly agreed to be a part of the show have also been criticized for lending strength to a problematic script.

Which bring us to this latest development: Rehmat Ajmal has taken to Instagram to pen a letter which expresses her disappointment with Khalil ur Rehman’s opinions and how she isn’t proud to have been a part of the show. “I absolutely do not endorse the concepts and viewpoints of Mr. Khalil Ul Rehman. I watched Khalil ul Rehman’s interview and got to know about his problematic views on very many things WAY after the project was completed. I am not proud to be a part of something that is so compromising and ill-informed. However, I (like many others) was not aware of the entire story line or Mr. Khalil ul Rehman’s ideology at the time this project was shot – which was a year ago. My role in this project is limited so, I did not get a chance to see how it’ll come together or how it’ll eventually unroll on television and that is where I think I slipped a little. It was my first ever telecom project and I am learning,” she wrote.
