Mahira Khan urges PM to pass bill against domestic abuse

In the wake of ongoing femicides, empowering women is the only way to start fixing things

KARACHI: Rattled by the frequency and viciousness of recent femicide cases, Pakistan stands with sore eyes, accountable and guiltridden. Pakistani society has largely been a rape culture promoting culprits with the apologies and excuses we continue to make for them, even in the most recent cases which one thought could hardly be excused in any case. Out of many calling out systemic injustice in Pakistan against women is Mahira Khan, who has now taken to her Twitter to request Prime Minister Imran Khan to ensure that bill against Domestic Violence is passed and made law.

A clip from Naya Daur’s Twitter account notified users of PM’s keen interest in Noor Muqaddam’s case and his reassurance that justice will be served. He revealed that he has closely been following the case and will make sure the culprit will not get away with the horrors he has been guilty of.

Mahira Khan retweeted the very clip, tagging PM Imran Khan via Twitter, and wrote, “THIS!! @ImranKhanPTI Now please please get the domestic violence bill passed. Till there aren’t laws in place, women will always be vulnerable to abuse. There must be accountability.”

In instances where it has become second nature to assume culprits will get away with their crimes against women, it is important to empower victims who have survived domestic abuse, as well as any potential victims. The law must ensure women’s safety and equip them with legislation to pull the brakes on the violation women undergo out in the open in broad daylight, as well as behind closed doors.

The Raees actress is currently starring in Hum Kahan Kay Sachay Thay, alongside Usman Mukhtar and Kubra Khan and the drama’s first episode went on air last Sunday, 1st August 2021.
