Hum Tum: Relatable, humorous and fresh

KARACHI: Three Ramadan specials went on air as Pakistan wrapped up the first roza of 2022. While drama enthusiasts were looking forward to all three, Hum Tv’s 9 pm special had a fan following of its own. After all, Ahad Raza Mir was set to return to the small screen after a break which seemed way too long for his fans. After watching episode 1 of Hum Tum, the drama seems to have been worth the hype.

As evident from the teasers, Hum Tum revolves around two families that happen to be neighbours. Adnan Jaffar and Farhan Ally Agha play friends-turned-neighbours with very different family dynamics yet, the grass is always greener on the other side for both of them. Ramsha Khan and Sarah Khan play Jaffar’s daughters, while Ahad Raza Mir and Junaid Khan adapt the roles of Agha’s sons.

Maha (Sarah Khan) is the eldest of three sisters of a father who desperately wishes for a son and more disciplined children. Maha is a fitness freak and also a divorcee, a piece of information that is casually mentioned in passing. Neha (Ramsha Khan) is the notorious middle child who knows how to trick their father, sneak out, ride a bike and give their neighbour’s a piece of her mind. The youngest sister, Sasha, is a computer genius. A mere teenager, she enters her first scene after successfully hacking yet another account. What all three sisters have in common is that they excel academically. Their father might have high expectations but the girls are also not ones to falter.

Going next door, we are introduced to Adam (Ahad Raza Mir) and Sarmad (Junaid Khan), two hardworking sons of an otherwise unemployed father who gambles away his sons’ hard earned money. Sarmad runs their restaurant, Chatkharay, while Adam attends the same university as Neha and also helps his brother out when his schedule allows. The two also have a younger sister who is no less than a tomboy and often uses male pronouns to refer to herself.

Other characters introduced to us are Adam’s adorable nani who runs an online marriage bureau of her own while Neha’s dada is a tiktok star. Arjumand Rahim plays the role of Ramsha Khan’s mother while Munazzah Arif plays Ahad Raza Mir’s mother.

What is truly admirable about the drama is that it will genuinely make you smile. Devoid of slapstick comedy, the jokes shared by the characters are relatable and funny. Ramsha Khan, specially, nails her comic timing and joke delivery once again. Ahad Raza Mir clearly tested new waters with his character but he seems to be gelling in well in a role that deviates from the typical hero, saviour facade he usually attracts.

Farhan Ally Agha’s dialogues specially sit well with a desi dad who believes his is the victim and that the world is against him simply because he does not earn. Muhammad Ahmed as Neha’s dada will immediately put a smile to your face. His character is one that will remind you of your own grandparents and how they tend to spoil their grandchildren regardless of how strict one’s parents might be.

With the right casting, relatable storyline and jokes that are not over the top, Hum Tum is definitely one to watch out for this Ramzan.
