New Zealand PM, ministers announce 20% pay cut in solidarity with Covid 19 affectees

Jacinda Ardern says if there was any a time to close the gap, it’s now

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced on Wednesday that she and her cabinet ministers would take a 20% pay cut lasting six months in solidarity with all those affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

According to The Guardian, that the prime minister’s salary would be cut by NZ$47,104, while the ministers would take a cut of$26,900 each.

“If there was ever a time to close the gap between groups of people across New Zealand in different positions, it is now. I am responsible for the executive branch and this is where we can take action … it is about showing solidarity in New Zealand’s time of need,” Ardern said, adding, “This was always just going to be an acknowledgement of the hit that many New Zealanders will be taking at the moment.”

New Zealand is currently in complete lockdown with 1900 cases confirmed and 9 deaths reported.
