KARACHI: Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone is starring in the upcoming film Chhapaak that is due to be released in January, 2020. The trailer of the film was released on Monday and as expected, it was powerful and left quite a few fans speechless.

The film claims to be based on true events, particularly on the life story of acid victim Laxmi Agarwal. At the mere age of 15, Laxmi was attacked with acid by a man whose advances she rejected. She is now an activist for acid attack survivors and has gathered 27,000 signatures for a petition to curb acid sales.

Deepika Padukone tends to play empowered female characters, such as the one in Cocktail and Bajirao Mastani, and her upcoming film Chhapaak shows a woman subjugated by the evils of patriarchy standing up for herself and fighting the system. The trailer initially shows Deepika’s character, Malti to be entirely crippled by the attack that takes over her life but towards the end shows the progression in her willpower to defeat her attacker and ultimately to curb the availability of acid in markets. Malti is shown to say, “If it (acid) wasn’t available/sold, it wouldn’t be thrown.”

The film is co-produced by Deepika Padukone and Fox Star Studios and will mark Deepika’s first project as a producer.
