Joaquin Phoenix wins Golden Globe for Joker

He took the stage to accept the award but brought focus to the affects of climate change in his speech

KARACHI: Todd Phillip’s Joker has won big at the Golden Globes this year but the one award we were all expecting anyway was for Joaquin Phoenix’s performance in the film. The actor won in the category of Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama and beat Christian Bale for Ford V Ferrari and Adam Driver for Marriage Story.

Phoenix brought up climate change in his acceptance speech, when he spoke about the importance of voting but also taking practical steps in our own lives to help change things for the environment. “We don’t need to take private jets to Palm Springs,” he said.

In fact, Variety reports that “according to sources, the actor — who is a staunch animal rights activist — also convinced the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organization that runs the Golden Globes, to implement its first all-vegan menu at the ceremony’s star-studded dinner.”

Apparently Phoenix suggested the idea to the Globes and also played a key role in persuading them to make the switch, reports Variety.
