KARACHI: Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg has received a lot of attention for the amazing work she has been doing to warn people of the climate emergency that the world is facing. At the recent UN Climate Summit, the 16-year-old spoke out against the minimal action that world leaders have taken to counter the issue of climate change.
Visibly upset and disappointed, Greta said she feels as though world leaders are “failing us”. In her powerful speech, which is being wildly quoted, she said, “We are in the beginning of a mass extinction and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth, how dare you!”
Following her speech, a video of her seemingly staring down US President Donald Trump went viral as her fixated and apparent discontented look suggested she was less than pleased with him. Trump is known for his lack of commitment to climate change, and once called it a hoax. Greta received a lot of online praise for this video with Julián Castro, a Democratic presidential contender, tweeting: “I think a lot of us can relate.”
Shockingly, the US president made yet another problematic move on Twitter by retweeting the video of her impassioned speech and insinuating that she seems like a ‘happy young girl’ that is being perceived by many as a sarcastic jab at the activist.
Greta has previously voiced that she has been bullied for her looks by her ‘haters’ that try to undermine her work and are finding excuses to complain about her. She has been diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome and OCD as well as selective mutism.
Here’s how Twitter is reacting to Trump’s sarcastic tweet.
