Wakhri: The movie inspired by Qandeel Baloch

KARACHI: 2022 has been quite the year for Pakistanis especially where the entertainment industry is concerned. With masterpieces such as Kamli and Maula Jatt breaking the monotony of genre and with movies like Joyland breaking barriers, it seemed as though we had hit our high. But it seems there is still more that the year has to offer. Iram Parveen Bilal has just wrapped up her project Wakhri, a new movie that has been inspired by the life and death of Qandeel Baloch.

Wakhri will star Faryal Mehmood and Gulshan Majeed as well as several well known social media influencers. The new movie is inspired by and offers tribute to Qandeel Baloch and focuses on the patriarchal undertones of social media trolling. As per Variety, the movie follows a Pakistani schoolteacher who accidentally unleashes the power of social media, unabashedly challenging the patriarchy. As she tries to keep her online identity a secret, she’s gradually exposed to society’s dangerous underbelly and forced to manage the repercussions.

As per the I’ll Meet You There director, the project can only be described as a “grounded masala” film that promises thought-provoking subject matter whilst also featuring loud Punjabi-language club tracks and Urdu-language rap songs to dance and chant with. Songs sung by Meesha Shafi, Eva B and Abdullah Siddiqui will feature in the movie and Kanwal Khoosat will lend her expertise on the production design while Sacred Games editor Aarti Bajaj will edit the project.

While a release date for the movie has not been announced, it’s fair to say we are all looking forward to what is has to offer!
