5 of our most favorite videos by Ali Gul Pir

KARACHI: Ali Gul Pir has for a while been leading the comedic scene in Pakistan, especially during the pandemic when he has turned the situation around by recreating viral videos. He uses his rap and his videos to also bring attention to several social issues such as fat-shaming, incompetency of the government, and the spread of misinformation.

While all of his videos are most notably a sharp commentary while being hilarious at the same time, here are some of our favorites:

1. Parody of Cannoli owners

A video where two owners of Cannoli were seen making fun of one of their employees went viral in January this year. Several people pointed out how such behavior was absolutely offensive. Ali Gul Pir, collaborating with George Fulton and Akbar Chaudry, came up with a parody video for the occasion.

The video offers an appropriate caricature of the two women and how insecure they seem demeaning their employees over their English.

2. Parody of Mawra Hocane nullifying the issue of street harassment

Street harassment is an issue that affects women from lower economic groups the most. Unfortunately, the women that get to share their opinion on public platforms are more often than not, women from more privileged backgrounds. Such a case occurred when Mawra Hocane decided that street harassment is simply ‘Lahori fun’ and not that big a deal.

Ali Gul Pir once again jumped to another opportunity to come up with another one of his videos to accurately depict just how people sound when they try to downplay harassment issues in Pakistan.

3. Parody of Agha Ali fat-shaming on live television

Fat-shaming has been rampant throughout our culture for eons. The idea that women can magically lose weight, and need to be a certain body type and size to be considered attractive is not just followed by herds but also superimposed when our media and celebrities normalize it. Agha Ali and his newly-wed bride Hina Altaf were on Nida Yasir’s morning show, when the couple revealed how Agha expects his wife to remain slim all her life.

4. Take on drama serial Oye Moti tackling fat-shaming

The previous video is not the only time Pir made fun of the notion of fat-shaming. Recently, the drama “Oye Moti” came out and took social media by storm due to its fat-shaming storyline. Ali Gul Pir made another video to not only poke fun at the idea but also the way it was treated by its production.

5. Parody of misinformation spread by public figures regarding Covid-19

WhatsApp circulated videos regarding vaccines containing 5G chips that can supply personal information to the Illuminati are particularly prevalent. This discourages a large population that cannot do its own research due to either the inaccess of resources or simply the unwillingness to do so. Ali Gul Pir, during such a time, used his videos to not only inform people that getting vaccinated is crucial but also highlighted how the ones spreading this fake news have no idea what they are talking about.
