Memes, movie screenings and artwork: Bid for Pakistan

KARACHI: With more than 33% of the country underwater and politicians proving just how inept the government is, the people of Pakistan have stood up and taken on the responsibility of fundraising for the flood victims. And a part of the flood fundraising includes auctions and bids!

Jemima Goldsmith took to social media to announce that she was auctioning off a private screening in London for her new movie What's Love Got to do With It? The movie has been written by Goldsmith and also marks her debut as a producer. The movie which stars Sajal Aly in a prominent role was set to see its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this month followed by a cinematic release in the UK in January 2023. However, twenty fans will get to see the first screening of the movie while supporting a good cause!

Fatima Bhutto and her brother Zulfikar Ali Bhutto are also doing their part in fundraising for the flood victims. Bhutto announced the silent auction on Twitter and wrote, “We are auctioning some incredible experiences to raise funds for flood relief in Pakistan.” While Goldsmith’s private screening is a part of the same initiative, a total of 35 items and experiences are being auctioned including a ticket to Rupi Kaur’s World Tour, artwork by the likes of Misha Japanwala, Abdullah Qureshi, and Zulfikar Bhutto.

In similar fashion, the viral meme “Wow Grape” is now being auctioned off for fundraising for the Pakistan flood victims. The meme will be auctioned off as a Non Fungible Token (NFT) on 30th September, on the digital art marketplace, Foundation. A portion of the funds generated from NFT sale will be donated towards the rehabilitation of flood victims across Pakistan.
