Women create history at the Grammys 2021

KARACHI: Like many award ceremonies which were either postponed or hosted on a small scale owing to the global pandemic, the Annual Grammy Awards also revamped the layout of the show for 2021. Initially scheduled for January 31st, the ceremony went on air on 14th March and was hosted by Trevor Noah. While many might have expected the award show to have lost its charm or grandeur, the women from the music industry ensured that the Grammys this year would be remembered as well as any other edition. The night marked history of firsts for Beyonce, Taylor Swift and Megan Thee Stallion.

Beyonce has been audiences’ favourite for years and with her talent, she continues to prove why she deserves to be called Queen B. Leading the nominations with nine categories, she took home the awards for Best R&B Performance (for ‘Black Parade’) and Best Music Video (for ‘Brown Skin Girl’). Adding to the list were the awards for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for ‘Savage’ featuring Beyonce. The lead singer, Megan Thee Stallion, also became the first woman to win under the Best Rap Song category while Beyonce is the most-awarded woman in the history of Grammys, with a total of 28 wins.

Another moment dedicated to the plight of black people in America came in the form of the song of the year ‘I can’t breathe’ by H.E.R, a song which quotes the last words of George Floyd. “Remember, we are the change that we wish to see and you know that fight that we had in us the summer of 2020, keep that same energy. Thank you,” she said in her acceptance speech.

This year’s Grammys also titled Folklore by Taylor Swift as the Album of the Year, making her the first woman to win the category three times.
