KARACHI: Irish rock band U2 famously known for their tracks ‘With or Without You’, ‘Vertigo’ and ‘Ordinary Love’ announced on their Twitter that this December they are planning to hold a show in Mumbai for ‘The Joshua Tree Tour’ commemorating the 30th anniversary of their 1987 album The Joshua Tree.
Following the announcement, while some people are ecstatic to have the band perform in their country for the first time, others are calling the band out for being insensitive and hypocritical for reportedly adding to and ignoring the larger issue at hand. The issue being, the seemingly problematic handling of the Indian government in relation to revoking autonomy of Indian Kashmir and forcing a communications blackout that has been on going since August 5.

In an interview with Live Mint, U2 band member The Edge stated, “India has been on our bucket list for a long time; we’ve looked towards Gandhi and his principles of non-violence as an important pillar of what our band stands for.”However, some users on Twitter have found these sayings to be unrealistic towards the current situation in India with some stating that the government’s treatment toward Indian Kashmir is anything but influenced by ‘principles of non-violence.’
