KARACHI: Meesha Shafi
is a force to be reckoned with. With her unique sound, she is a fan favorite in the Pakistani music industry. But now, she is on to bigger things. And by bigger we mean an international movie with none other than Hasan Minhaj
and Alicia Silverstone. Yes, you read that right: Hasan Minhaj and Meesha Shafi are going to share the screen in a new movie called Moustache.
Moustache is a coming of age Pakistani-American movie that is largely autobiographical for the filmmaker Imran J. Khan. The film will follow Ilyas, played by Atharva Verma, an eccentric 13-year-old boy who sets off to navigate the social hierarchy of his new California public school with a mustache his parents will not allow him to shave off. Rizwan Manji (from Schitts Creek) will play Ilyas’s father while Shafi will play his mother. However, while we know who Meesha Shafi will play there has been silence about Hasan Minhaj and Alicia Silverstone’s characters, which makes it even more exciting!
Filmmaker Imran Khan has previously written and directed a number of award-winning shorts including 2016’s Prom, which was based on ideas from Minhaj’s stand-up special Hasan Minhaj: Homecoming King. He has also worked on the editing side of movies such as Space Jam: A New Legacy and Minions: The Rise of Gru. Khan was recently also selected for the Pillars Artist Fellowship, created by Riz Ahmed’s Left Handed Films and Pillars Fund to support and mentor Muslim writers and directors.
As exciting as the new movie sounds, we will have to wait a while before we get to see Meesha Shafi and Hasan Minhaj share the screen because a release date has not been announced just yet.
