Alia Bhatt’s mehendi lehenga was an ode to sustainability

KARACHI: Famous Bollywood couple Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor tied the knot last week. Even before the wedding, fans and media were more than interested in knowing every little detail of the celebration. From the lehenga that Alia Bhatt was going to wear, to the venue of the wedding, speculations and guesses were made about pretty much everything. When the couple finally did share pictures from their big day, it looked nothing short of a dream.

Alia Bhatt specially caught many people’s attention with her subtle bridal look. For her big day, the bride donned on an elegant white saari by Sabyasachi. Surprising many by choosing to not wear a traditional red dress at the wedding, Alia Bhatt turned things around and stunned in a pink Manish Malhotra lehenga on her mehendi. While the happy bride looked nothing short of stunning, the story behind her lehenga makes her look even more special.

Designer Manish Malhotra shared the thought process that went into creating Bhatt’s sustainable. mehendi outfit. “A treasure of traceability and trust. The very beautiful @aliaabhatt chose to personalize her mehendi ensemble with a sustainable approach, where approximately 180 textiles patches come together to mark her momentous occasion, the most special one indeed,” shared Malhotra.

“The custom touches reminisce about her journey and depict symbolic elements of her memories,” elaborated the designer before specifying that the work on the lehenga and blouse was “Inscribed through Kashmiri and Chikankari threads (and) the passionate 3000-hour intricate handwork of Mijwan women.”

Patches of the silk lehenga were “woven together using a couture technique of cross-stitches with three tar and six tar anchors” and carry banarasi brocades, jacquard, bandhani, kachha resham knots. The customised lehenga even contained scraps from previous Manish Malhotra brides’ outfits.

Safe to say, Alia Bhatt’s bridal looks may have seemed simple to the naked eye but a lot of creative and emotional thought went into making sure the clothes reflected her personal journey!
