Celebrating the colours of life, the music video is in fact a work of art. While the song does not have complicated lyrics or composition, its beauty lies in its celebration of love in all forms. The video is as colourful as Ali Sethi had promised it would be as he shared teasers over the last few weeks. Shot in Lahore and New York, the music film by Umar Riaz and Diane Desobeau adheres to a socially distanced world. Nonetheless, love for people, life and self still exists in the otherwise distant world.
Inclusivity and acceptance come out as important themes in the music video. Featuring young men and women, members of the Khwaja Sira community, an old couple, a child, ‘Rung’ develops on the idea that love is for everyone. Be it another human being, a friend, music, or dance, being passionate about something or someone is what makes us human. As Ali Sethi sings “tum aye toh yeh rung hain, tum se hai qarar” (you bring colour to my world, you put my soul at peace), the characters in the video hug each other, laugh, unite with their loved ones and are simply joyous in the moment.
Of course, Sethi’s signature raag (a melodic framework that literally translates into colour) also makes its way into the composition, providing a smooth transition into classical music. The song otherwise stands in complete contrast to ‘Mere Aur Hain Iraaday’, a track released earlier this year.
