KARACHI: The Single National Curriculum (SNC) was launched on August 16, 2021. The government aims to implement it across Pakistan. According to the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training, the SNC aims to provide all children with a fair and equal opportunity to receive high-quality education. The development of SNC is driven by several considerations such as the teachings of Quran and Sunnah, the vision of Quaid and Iqbal, constitutional framework, national Policies, aspirations and national standards, etc.
Ever since the launch, the SNC has been subject to a lot of critique on social media platforms. Murtaza Solangi tweeted earlier today, “Really? Are you serious? Women manage the whole house besides their workplace including the men who can’t keep their ties and socks in order. Is this the real face of SNC under Mullah Imran Niazi and Mullah Shafqat Mehmood?”
Nida Kirmani tweeted, “People actually believe the SNC will increase access to education. Ummm how exactly? Why not build some more damn schools & make sure ‘ghost schools’ are actually functioning? Parents don’t need to be convinced by putting little girls in hijabs. They just need access.”
In addition, Anees Hassan Khan added his bit to the conversation stating, “Under Imran Khan and Shafqat Mehmood, the SNC means that football isn’t for women, as in the cover only 2 boys are playing football.”
The discourse around the Single National Curriculum is filled with concerns over the kind of content it has within it and the kind of consequences it will have on the younger generation.
