Tiktok to be banned in Pakistan yet again

KARACHI: The social networking app, TikTok, has been a constant source of controversy in Pakistan lately. While many believe the app provides a platform to new digital creators and a voice to the masses to explore their talents, others believe the content on the app does not correspond with the values and morals of Pakistani society. In a recent decision, a ban is to imposed yet again on TikTok in Pakistan. The initiative seems to have been taken by Peshawar High Court in light of a private complaint that was made against the app.

“The social media app was spreading indecent content”, Jehanzeb Mehsud, who represented Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) in the case, told Reuters

PTA has also confirmed the news regarding the blocking of TikTok in Pakistan. “In respectful compliance to the orders of the Peshawar High Court, PTA has issued directions to the service providers to immediately block access to the TikTok App. During the hearing of a case today, the PHC has ordered for the blocking of App,” the authorities posted on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Twitter has been sharing mixed reactions to the situation.

PTA had previously banned TikTok in October 2020. However, the app had later been restored in the country.
