Why was Mehwish Hayat trolled for this photo?

KARACHI: Mehwish Hayat is a Pakistani actress who has acted in a number of empowering dramas and films, some of the most prominent ones being Sheher-e-Dil Kay Darwazay where she plays a blackmail and harassment victim and Load Wedding where she plays the role of a sister in law trying to get her nand hitched, highlighting dowry-related problems faced by the bride and her family in our society.

She has twice won a Lux Style Award as both, a film actress as well as a TV actress. On her performance and roles that have contributed towards a better society for women and minorities, she was given a Tamgha-e-Imtiaz on 23rd March 2019.

In spite of all these achievements, Mehwish is still criticized heavily. Earlier this morning she tweeted a picture of herself.

Trolls, ready to jump on the bandwagon on bullying the celebrity, posted comments to that picture and criticized her for various things, such as the caption and her claim that she woke up like this (which is obviously sarcasm on Mehwish’s part).

Moments later, Mehwish uploaded another picture, again coming strong with her sarcasm.

This isn’t the first time Mehwish has been subjected to unnecessary trolling. When the actress was awarded the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, a number of people assumed the reason for her winning the award was her supposed political affiliations.

Upon discarding all her significant works in film and TV, people trolling her were quick to completely focus on the scenes they considered bold, which Mehwish had enacted. Their attention entirely being set on the item song Billi from Na Maloom Afraad, they saw her for nothing else but someone who was not in any way fit to be a representation of women according to the unrealistic standards set by them.

It’s unfortunate that while we are busy policing our talent, the rest of the world is celebrating and encouraging theirs.
