KARACHI: Popular writer and misogynist Khalilur Rehman Qamar, who has become notorious for his hateful remarks against women, has struck once again.
By this time, you’d think we’d be less surprised not only by his continuous display of misogyny but also by the media that enables him and the people who revere him. Yet, here we are again.

In the most recent incident, which has caused a fair amount of outrage on social media, Khalil is seen yelling, abusing and throwing a fit at his co-panelist Marvi Sirmed who interrupted him with the slogan “Mera Jism, Meri Marzi (My body, my choice)”. The video was part of a show hosted on Neo News.
He was in middle of saying, “When I hear Marvi say indecent and pathetic slogans like ‘mera jism, meri marzi,’ it upsets me to my core,” when Marvi repeated the slogan.
This prompted Khalil to raise his voice , telling her to stop interrupting and then immediately resorted to attacking her appearance, “Tere jism me hai kya? (which can be roughly translated to what’s great about your body?”

He went on to say, “Who the hell are you? Look at your body”.
This wasn’t the worst of it. “No one will even spit on your body, you indecent woman,” he went on to say, as Marvi refused to back off.
Here’s how it continued:
Khalil: “You pathetic woman”
Host: “Marvi sahiba, your turn will come. Please stop.”
Khalil: “Don’t talk bloody nonsense, you know!”
Marvi: “Oh shut up”
Khalil: “You shut up, bitch”
Host: “Marvi sahiba, we are being so respectful. Please wait your turn”
Khalil: “Ullu ki pathi”
The writer called a woman a “bitch” on national TV, yet the host continued to tone-police Marvi, constantly asking her to be quiet while not even batting an eyelid at the abusive Khalil. The third panelist, Senator Maulana Faiz Mohammad, also chose to remain mostly quiet, ever so often asking Marvi to back off.
Since no one checked Khalil, he went on to say, “teri aisi ki tesi” – another abusive expression.
The host later posted an apology to her viewers, saying she was unable to do anything at the moment.
Meanwhile, Marvi remained unbothered and more empowered.
