Donald Trump’s visit to India marred by deadly and violent protests

KARACHI: Fresh violence has erupted in the Indian capital right when US President Donald Trump makes his first official visit to India. According to Al Jazeera, 7 people have been killed and over 50 people, including 37 police officials, have been injured after supporters and opponents of the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) clashed in New Delhi. The clashes are said to have been provoked by a local leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Kapil Mishra, who led a rally in support of the new citizenship law.

The clash began when a Hindu mob violently descended on a group of Muslim protesters, according to The Guardian. The Muslim protesters had been peacefully blocking a road for several days to protest against the CAA, which many believe is discriminatory towards Muslims.

According to reports, the Hindu group began beating Muslim demonstrators, who then responded with violence.

Twitter is trending with scenes of violence and chaos in New Delhi, as shops and cars are set on fire.

At a joint press conference between Trump and Modi on Tuesday afternoon, no mention was made of religious freedom or the current unrest in India. Instead, the pair focused on a trade deal between the two countries. “I am optimistic we can reach a deal of great importance to both countries,” said Trump.
