Deepika Padukone’s social experiment shows how easy it is to buy acid in India

KARACHI: Deepika Padukone is going above and beyond to take the plight of acid victims seriously. Her film, Chhapaak, which is based on the true story of Laxmi Agarwal, has opened to raving reviews from critics and is doing fairly well in terms of box office records as well.

But it doesn’t end there for Deepika Padukone. She went one step further and did a social experiment for the promotion of her film, the cause and to highlight how the problem with acid-throwing is the easy availability of acid itself.

Watch: Acid attacks are a bigger crime than murder

With the help of actors and hidden cameras, Deepika’s team went around (it’s unclear which city or cities this experiment takes place in) and tried to purchase extremely deadly acid that can burn human skin. Some of these actors even ask the shopkeepers if the acid they’re purchasing is strong enough to burn human skin and in response, many sellers confirm yes.

The short film points out that India has strict laws when it comes to buying acid: for instance, the buyer must be above 18 years of age and a valid photo ID proof is required.
