KARACHI: With sex ed at an all-time low, an age old query still confuses many: is it safe to have sex during your period or not? Or if you’re a guy: is it okay to have sex with your partner if she is on her period? We spoke to two experts to find out. Read on to know what they said.
First off, it is important to understand the function of the body during menstruation.
During period, the opening of the uterus is extremely sensitive and loose that actually causes the bleeding. “Therefore, that opening may also become a carrier for infections into the uterine cavity,” elaborates General practitioner and sonologist Dr Kishwar Lucas. “And once an infection enters the uterine cavity, it is easily transferable to the abdominal cavity.”
Women can only have sex during their period if they’re sterilised, but overall, it’s not recommended, says Dr Lucas in an interview with Cutacut.
Intercourse during period may result in a range of sexually transmitted infections (STI) and sexually transmitted diseases (STD) such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Other infections may be general or gonorrheal, states Dr Lucas.
She furthered that when a woman is menstruating, the body defense mechanism is really low, due to which overall immunity is very low too. Due to this, minor infections can become very drastic and serious infections can become fatal, adds Dr Lucas.
Another expert who chose to remain anonymous said that the primary reason its prohibited even religiously is due to hygiene factors. “A place that’s bleeding shouldn’t be used for intercourse,” the expert emphasized, keeping her identity concealed.
“It isn’t human to have sex during period,” she maintained.
The expert went on to say that if one seeks a female consent, she probably wouldn’t agree because given a woman’s hormonal levels during this time, there’s little or no desire for intercourse.
The female is more prone as compared to the male, concludes Dr Lucas.
